Apple’s assertions of carbon neutrality in its latest product launches have recently sparked debate and scrutiny from various European environmental and consumer groups. At its annual product showcase, Apple made a splash by branding some Apple Watch models as its “first-ever carbon neutral products,” signalling an ambitious goal to extend this status to all its devices by 2030. However, this move, heavily reliant on the purchase of carbon credits to offset emissions from new Watches, has drawn criticism amid a broader clampdown by the European Union on what is often referred to as “greenwashing.”
The core of the controversy lies in the EU’s recent proposal to ban the use of “carbon neutral” in corporate marketing, categorising it as misleading. This move is backed by consumer organisations like BEUC, which champions accurate scientific communication and consumer protection. BEUC’s director-general has been vocal about eliminating such “bogus messages” from the marketplace, indicating that no company, not even tech giant Apple, should be exempt from this forthcoming regulation.
Apple’s carbon neutrality claims indeed underscore a significant challenge faced by corporations: aligning genuine environmental responsibility with the strategic communication of green credentials. Apple has defended its approach, claiming it demonstrates one of the industry’s most audacious climate commitments by prioritising immediate emission reductions alongside significant investments in conservation and carbon removal.
In contrast, Apple’s main competitor, Samsung, has been less transparent, excluding crucial emission details in its 2050 net-zero target. The EU’s impending ban, set to be in place by 2026, will prohibit neutrality claims based on carbon credits, reflecting a political agreement aimed at eradicating misleading environmental impact advertisements.
The scrutiny over Apple’s carbon footprint isn’t limited to the veracity of neutrality claims. There’s also a growing dialogue about the effectiveness of carbon credits and whether they provide a comprehensive assessment of an electronic product’s environmental impact. Critics argue that the focus on carbon emissions does not fully account for the lifecycle of devices, which often have a short repairable life and end up contributing to e-waste.

Apple’s approach involves compensating for emissions linked to the manufacturing, shipping, and use of its Watch through investment in forestry projects. These initiatives are said to absorb carbon dioxide and foster economic opportunities in deforested areas. However, sceptics, like those at the Compensate Foundation, question the long-term efficacy of such schemes, pointing out that carbon stored in timber often re-enters the atmosphere quickly after the trees are harvested and used.
The tech titan remains steadfast, asserting that its strategies provide a stringent blueprint for decarbonising products, with a promise to continue driving innovations to reduce emissions.
In this ongoing “race to zero,” Apple’s proactive stance on recycling and reducing emissions offers a glimmer of progress, though the dialogue around carbon neutrality claims is far from settled. As global attention on environmental impact intensifies, companies like Apple are in the spotlight, navigating the complex interplay between sustainable practices, regulatory compliance, and consumer expectations.
