In the last few decades, commercial aviation has seen advancements in technology, but one thing has remained the same: the tube-and-wing aircraft design. However, this could change by the end of the decade with the rise of the “blended wing” aircraft, inspired by stealth bombers.
JetZero, a US-based startup, is pioneering this new aircraft design, which could dramatically reduce carbon emissions, a crucial step for the aviation industry’s goal of reaching net zero by 2050. The industry faces increasing pressure, as it contributes 2-3% of global CO₂ emissions, a number likely to grow as other sectors decarbonize faster.
JetZero’s unique aircraft combines the wings and fuselage, improving fuel efficiency by 50% compared to traditional planes while utilizing existing engine technology. This innovative design has garnered interest from airlines globally and aims to begin commercial flights by 2027. Notably, the plane will seat between 200 and 250 passengers, filling the gap between single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft models.
Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) are expected to play a crucial role in achieving the net zero goal. Although SAFs can reduce emissions by up to 70%, current production is far below what’s required for meaningful progress by 2050. JetZero’s solution, coupled with increased SAF production, offers a glimmer of hope.
While established manufacturers like Airbus and Boeing have explored similar designs, JetZero is moving quickly, backed by industry players like Alaska Airlines. If successful, the blended wing aircraft could revolutionize air travel and significantly contribute to the decarbonization of the aviation sector.
