Net-Zero Transitions
Net zero is where greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that enter the atmosphere are balanced out by their removal. We achieve net zero through reducing emissions, or actively removing them.
The IPCC’s goal is to limit global average temperatures to “well-below 2°C above pre-industrial levels”. Current climate policies will result in global warming of more than 3°C (5.4°F) by the end of the century. Failing to achieve net-zero emissions will have severe and far-reaching consequences across environmental, economic, and social dimensions.
Rising Global Temperatures – Uncontrolled emissions will cause temperatures to rise by 2.5°C to 4.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100. Higher temperatures exacerbate heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, and tropical storms.
Accelerating Ice Melt and Sea Level Rise – Polar ice sheets and glaciers will melt at a faster rate, increasing global sea levels by up to 1 meter or more by 2100. Low-lying coastal cities and islands (e.g., parts of Bangladesh, Miami, and Pacific Islands) will face inundation, displacing millions of people.
Extreme Weather Events – More frequent and severe storms, hurricanes, floods, and droughts will become the norm, as seen in climate model predictions. Hurricanes could intensify by 5-10% due to warmer oceans. Heatwaves could occur every 2-3 years instead of every few decades.
Biodiversity Loss – Up to 1 million species could face extinction by 2100 as ecosystems collapse. Coral reefs, which support 25% of marine life, may decline by over 90% due to ocean acidification and warming.
Mass Displacement – By 2050, an estimated 200-250 million people could become climate refugees due to rising seas, extreme weather, and loss of livelihoods.
Health Crises – Heat-related illnesses, air pollution, and diseases like malaria will spread further, leading to millions of premature deaths annually.
Widening Inequality – Vulnerable populations in developing countries will suffer the most, exacerbating global inequality and poverty.
Decline in Global GDP – Climate change and resource scarcity disrupt global supply chains, reduce productivity, and slow economic growth.
Increased Costs from Climate Disasters – Rising frequency and severity of natural disasters lead to higher recovery costs, insurance premiums, and economic instability.
Infrastructure Damage – Damage to transport, energy, and water systems increases government and private sector spending on repairs and climate adaptation.
Agriculture and Food Security – Shifting weather patterns and extreme conditions reduce crop yields, driving up food prices and destabilizing agricultural economies.
The Net-Zero transition is multifaceted in nature, requiring systemic, technological, economic, and social shifts. Significant investment is needed in clean technologies, energy-efficient infrastructure, and renewable energy systems. While technologies like renewable energy, electric vehicles, and carbon capture exist, scaling them quickly and economically remains a challenge.
A lack of global policy alignment or clear regulatory frameworks hampers progress. Many countries have differing targets and timelines. Many demands and known improvements are hampered by corruption, lobbying, misinformation, and greed.
But humanity faces a collective problem. We often prioritise immediate gains over long-term benefits. This had an evolutionary advantage; immediate survival needs (e.g. food, shelter, avoiding danger) were critical and so short-term gains were advantageous. The brain’s reward system [particularly the dopaminergic pathways in regions like the striatum] reinforces immediate gratification. However! Humans possess the ability to overcome this tendency through education, cultural norms, and conscious decision-making, indicating that we are not “hard-wired” to fixate on the short-term and can instead look to protect future generations.
Not achieving net-zero emissions will result in climate chaos, crippling economies, worsening inequalities, and devastating natural ecosystems. The costs of inaction far outweigh the investments needed for a net-zero transition, making urgent action both a moral imperative and an economic necessity.
